Lionsgate’s Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen is gearing up for principal photography by stacking its cast, with the recent addition of Milla Jovovich as the eponymous villainess, described as “a medieval sorceress who seeks to destroy humankind.” She joins Stranger Things actor David Harbour as Hellboy and American Gods star Ian McShane as Professor Broom.
The character originated in Hellboy: The Wild Hunt #8 by Mike Mignola and Duncan Fegredo where she is depicted as Nimue, the Lady of the Lake from Arthurian legend who seduced the wizard Merlin, learning his secrets. She then imprisons him and, driven to madness in his absence, comes to worship the Ogdru Jahad, serpentine/crustacean entities which once resided on, and presided over, Earth, now imprisoned in outer space.
Neill Marshall (The Descent, Dog Soldiers) is directing while Aron Coleite (Heroes, Crossing Jordan) is working on the latest draft of the script from an earlier one by Cosby (Eureka, Haunted), Christopher Golden (Ghosts of Albion: Legacy, Ghosts of Albion: Embers) and Mike Mignola.
Jovovich is no stranger to big budget sci-fi fare, having gotten her big break in 1995’s The Fifth Element and graduated to kicking ass in 2006’s Ultraviolet and the Resident Evil franchise, which recently just concluded with its last entry, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter.
