DC Unveils Their DARK NIGHTS: METAL

DC Comics has unveiled their full lineup of “nightmare Batmen” set to menace the Justice League in the upcoming Dark Nights: Metal story arc, penned by best-selling writers Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV and featuring art by Andy Kubert, Jim Lee, Greg Capullo and John Romita Jr.

These iterations of Batman hail from the Dark Multiverse, a collection of alternate universe described by Snyder as “worlds that are forged by nightmares,” as a result of the fact that in these worlds, “every choice a hero doesn’t take and every path they don’t walk.”

You can read the character names and descriptions below:

  • The Murder Machine, a New God-esque designed, or Cyborg-inspired denizen.
  • The Red Death, a combination of Batman wielding the Speed Force.
  • The Devastator, Batman mixed with Doomsday.
  • The Merciless, Batman harnessing the power of Ares.
  • The Drowned, Atlantis-powered Batman.
  • The Dawnbreaker, Batman with a Green Lantern ring.

Not pictured is the 7th member, The Batman Who Laughs, an obvious combination of Batman and the Joker.

Snyder has previously spoken about the genesis of this concept and the characters, stating:

“The origins of these characters, too, are really, really special. They’re a lot of the nightmares I thought about, like ‘What if Batman goes too far?’ in different ways. What if he took this one turn as a kid and wanted to bring his parents back in a way that would take him into the dark? What if after Superman died, Batman started experimenting with the Doomsday virus in a way that would prevent this from ever happening again, but he goes too far?… Why Bruce might use the Speed Force to try and be faster should a catastrophe have happened. Why he might go up against Ares.”

Dark Nights: Metal #1 goes on sale August 16, 2017.
