After years of hype, Warner Bros. appears to be moving forward with their Shazam film, and they’ve brought on David F. Sandberg (Annabelle: Creation, Lights Out) to direct, echoing the recent trend of horror movie directors helming superhero films like James Wan (The Conjuring, Insidious) helming Aquaman and Scott Derrickson (Sinister, The Exorcism of Emily Rose) directing Doctor Strange. Sandberg confirmed his involvement earlier today during an interview with Kevin Smith at Comic Con where he revealed:
“It’s coming along pretty well. I’m very happy with the script and how it’s all coming along so it’s super exciting.”
Recent rumors have principle production beginning sometime in February. There’s still no word on who will be starring as the titular superhero, but Armie Hammer has long been the top contender. Dwayne Johnson has also been rumored to be appearing as the villainous Black Adam since 2014, but recent reports seem to indicate that this is no longer the case. This may have something to do with the confirmation back in January that Black Adam would be getting his own solo film.
