Following the initial promising box office and subsequent drop and mixed reception of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, Warner Bros.’ plans for their DC Extended Universe have been expanding exponentially since the release of Wonder Woman; which was both a critical and commercial success. Initially set to consist of the aforementioned films plus Justice League, Aquaman, Shazam, Wonder Woman 2, Cyborg, Green Lantern Corps and Justice League 2; the franchise has now grown to include Justice League Dark, Flashpoint, The Batman, Batgirl, Man of Steel 2, and untitled solo films for Black Adam and Nightwing among others. During their panel at Comic Con two weeks ago, the studio also announced they are developing a Harley Quinn vs. Joker film which would see Margot Robbie and Jared Leto reprising their roles from Suicide Squad, making this the third film related to that one along with Suicide Squad 2 and Gotham City Sirens, also in development. No director, writer or other actors have been announced as of yet.
Harley Quinn (who made her debut in 1992 on Batman: The Animated Series) has been portrayed as being in a manipulative, toxic relationship with the Joker, whom she affectionately calls “Mister J” and “Puddin'”. The two met while he was a patient at Arkham Asylum and she was an ambitious young psychologist who became fascinated with and fell in love with him. That was pretty much the status quo all along, although eventually Harley began to lash out at him for the years of abuse he inflicted on her, but her lingering feelings for him always caused her to go back to him. Under DC’s New 52 initiative, Harley finally managed to break away from the Joker in her self-titled comic book series co-written by Amanda Conner and her husband Jimmy Palmiotti which reinterpreted her as an antihero attempting to find redemption by working multiple jobs and becoming a crime fighter. Her most recent portrayal under the DC Rebirth relaunch sees her as a member, later leader, of the Suicide Squad, which consists of Captain Boomerang, Deadshot, Enchantress, Katana, and Killer Croc (which is basically the same lineup from the film).
Margot Robbie seems poised to become a centerpiece of the DCEU, similar to Ben Affleck‘s role as Batman or Robert Downey Jr.‘s Tony Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Her portrayal as Harley in Suicide Squad was very well received, and many fans are interested in seeing her return to the character.
