Strap in boys in girls, the Highway to the Danger Zone is about to open back up for business! Talk of a Top Gun sequel have been making the rounds for over 30 years, with concrete attempts going back to at least 2010, but the project was temporarily halted in 2012, when director Tony Scott committed suicide. However, things seem to be progressing again as the film now has an official title and director. Top Gun: Maverick will be directed by Joseph Kosinski (Oblivion, Tron Legacy) from a script by Justin Marks (The Jungle Book, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li). Tom Cruise is the only cast member from the original confirmed to be returning…so far. The plot is said to be centered around the end of the era of dogfighting pilots as the world moves into utilizing drone warfare. I’m willing to bet the cast will mostly consist of younger newcomers with Maverick (the former wild, reckless and aggressive young fighter pilot) is now in the position of teacher, like Viper (played by Tom Skerritt) in the first film; a trend that’s popular these days in sequels to 80s and 90s movies. Kosinski and Cruise made a great team on Oblivion, so I can’t wait to see what they do with this!
Top Gun: Maverick is set to be released July 12, 2018.
