This is Rumor Control. Here are the facts. At this point, there’s next to nothing known about Joss Whedon‘s Batgirl film and fans have been chomping at the bit for any piece of information they can come across. All we know so far is that writer/director Joss Whedon is looking at Gail Simone’s 2011 New 52 run on Batgirl for inspiration, which saw the character recovering from the Joker attack that left her paralyzed, originally chronicled in the 1988 graphic novel Batman: The Killing Joke. The story arch was very well received for the handling of its themes relating to violence against women and PTSD.
In regards to casting, fan speculation has been all over the place. But due to a recent Reddit post, we may now know which direction the studio is going in.
Reddit user DCEUThrowaway89 claims that a friend of his was contacted by Warner Bros. to develop concept art for the film featuring a shortlist of actresses to assist in the casting process. According to him, the actresses in question were:
- Elle Fanning (Neon Demon, Live By Night)
- Olivia Cooke (Bates Motel)
- Bella Throne (Shake It Up!)
- Katherine Langford (13 Reasons Why)
- Margaret Qualley (The Leftovers)
- Jane Levy (Don’t Breathe, Evil Dead)
- Emma Roberts (Scream Queens)
- Haley Lu Richardson (Split, Edge Of Seventeen)
- Naomi Scott (Power Rangers)
This source claims Langford is the current front runner, but Fanning, Levy, and Qualley are at the top of the list as well. They also claim that the studio is looking to lock an actress in ASAP so they can make an announcement at San Diego Comic Con, which is in two weeks. While there are some very viable candidates on this list, there’s no way to authenticate this information. So the only thing we can do is wait until SDCC and see if the studio makes an announcement.
