Netflix’s Castlevania series has fans in an extremely high state of anticipation to see the classic video game brought to life as an anime, based on Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse, released in 1989. Dredd producer Adi Shankar and comic book writer Warren Ellis teamed up with Fred Seibert (Adventure Time, The Fairly OddParents) and Kevin Kolde (Adventure Time, Samurai Jack) to produce the series, which Ellis is scripting. Sam Deats, who also served as a storyboard artist and animator, will be directing. Until now, it was unknown who would be voicing the characters but Shankar posted a video earlier today that reveals the main cast, and it’s full of fan favorites and surprises.
Graham McTavish (Preacher, Outlander) will portray Dracula Vlad Ţepeş. In the video games he was a former holy knight who fell from grace following the death of his wife and, in his quest for vengeance, became the vampire lord he’s known as.
Richard Armitage (Hannibal, The Hobbit) is voicing Trevor Belmont, member of the Belmont clan of vampire hunters previously banished for weilding superhuman abilities. In the original continuity, he is the ancestor of the series’ first protagonist, Simon Belmont. In Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate, the second game in the Lords of Shadow reboot series, Trevor is the son of Gabriel Belmont, aka Dracula, who is later made into a vampire by his father and takes the name Alucard.
James Callis (Battlestar Galactica, Bridget Jones’ Baby) provides the voice of Adrian Fahrenheit Ţepeş, aka Alucard, Dracula’s half-human/half-vampire son who took up arms against his father and sided with the Belmonts.
Alejandra Reynoso (G.I. Joe: Renegades, Winx Club) is voicing Sypha Belnades, a priestess, vampire hunter and witch from the game who wields elemental magic and serves God despite the fact that her sister witches were hunted down by the church. She would later marry Trevor and through her, the Belmont name would continue.
Emily Swallow (Supernatural, The Mentalist) was cast as Lisa Ţepeş, Dracula’s wife and Alucard’s mother.
Matt Frewer (Orphan Black, Timeless) and Tony Amendola (Annabelle, Once Upon a Time) will be voicing two seemingly original characters called The Bishop and The Elder.
McTavish has previously done voice acting for a bevy of video games such as Dante’s Inferno, Assassin’s Creed III, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Dragon Age: Origins, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Metro 2033 & Infamous 2 as well as animated work on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Wolverine and the X-Men, The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, Hulk Vs. Thor and Dead Space: Aftermath. He’s also worked with both Swallow and Armitage on previous projects – he voiced characters with Swallow for the video game The Order: 1886 and co-starred with Armitage in The Hobbit trilogy.
Amendola has been dabbling in video game voicework in recent years, having worked on World of Warcraft, Call of Duty: Black Ops III, Fallout 4 & Final Fantasy XV. This will be his first anime although he did provided additional voices for HBO’s Spawn.
The first season of Castlevania will be released on Netflix July 7, 2017.
