Each film in Fox’s X-Men franchise has also featured a supporting cast of mutants which have included fan favorites from across the various media which have included Gambit, Jubilee, Deadpool, Toad, Blob, Juggernaut, Darwin, Psylocke and Angel. The next film, X-Men: Dark Phoenix, is continuing that trend with the confirmation that it will finally introduce the character Dazzler into the films!
Debuting in Uncanny X-Men #130 (February 1980), Allison Blair (aka Dazzler) was a mutant with the ability to convert sound vibrations into light and energy beams which she used to pursue a career as a disco singer. One night, during a performance, her set was interrupted by an attack by the Hellfire Club, who were targeting the X-Men members in the audience, resulting in an angered Dazzler lashing out at them with her powers. This was the first time she had used her powers offensively, and she would do so again many times over the years with various other superheroes, resulting in her being offered a spot on the X-Men and being asked to audition for the Avengers. She declined both, desiring to stay away from heroics and keep her status as a mutant a secret. She would later reverse her stance and come out as a mutant, a move that ruined her career and sent her spiraling into depression which ultimately led to her joining the X-Men.
Screenwriter/director Gary Goddard (Masters of the Universe) was comissioned to write a Dazzler solo film back in the 80s starring Bo Derek (whom the character was partly based on), but the project was ultimately abandoned. Canadian country music singer Beverly Mahood was reportedly being eyed to appear as Dazzler in X-Men: The Last Stand while Bryan Singer was still onboard, but the character was scrapped after he left the project. Singer later falsely claimed that Lady Gaga would appear as Dazzler in X-Men: Days of Future Past as part of an April Fools prank. An easter egg to the character was seen in a deleted sequence for X-Men: Apocalypse in which Cyclops, Jean Grey, Jubilee and Nightcrawler sneak out of the X-Mansion to go to the mall, where Cyclops and Jean buy one of her albums.
It’s currently unknown who will be cast in the role, but I would expect a big name to be attached to the role. Initial rumors tied Taylor Swift to it, but those were immediately debunked. Lady Gaga could still pull it off, and with her recent forrays into acting, it makes even more sense.
Principal photography will begin this summer with James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Alexandra Shipp, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, and Kodi Smit-McPhee reprising their roles from previous films and Jessica Chastain currently in-talks to star as the main villain, Shi’ar Empress Lilandra Neramai.
Dark Phoenix is scheduled to be released on November 2nd, 2018.
