We’re officially two weeks away from the release of Spider-Man: Homecoming, and the official full cast list has made its way online via the official press junkit, and it brought some surprises.
Gwyneth Paltrow will be returning to the MCU as Pepper Potts, Tony Stark’s former love interest. She was last seen in Iron Man 3 as Tony’s live-in girlfriend and Stark Industries CEO and wound up infected with Extremis, a regenerative treatment used to create supersoldiers. By the events of Captain America: Civil War, the pair had broken up due to the strain of his superhero career. It’s unknown if the two have reconciled since then or if they will in this film.
Donald Glover‘s previously unknown character was revealed to be Aaron Davis, a villainous criminal known as the Prowler and uncle to Miles Morales, the Ultimate Universe’s Spider-Man. Glover previously voiced Morales on Ultimate Spider-Man. From various rumors and hints (as well as Glover’s non-villainous appeal), it would appear they are merging this character with Hobie Brown, a misunderstood and angry engineering prodigy who turned to crime to make a living as the Earth-616 incarnation of Prowler. This version went on to turn over a new leaf and became somewhat of a hero, even impersonating Spider-Man on Peter’s request whenever he needed to appear as both at the same time.
Better Call Saul actor Michael Mando was revealed to be playing Mac Gargan, also known as the supervillain Scorpion. He was also the third host of the Venom symbiote. In the comics, Gargan was a private investigator hired by J. Jonah Jameson to figure out how Peter Parker got the pictures of Spider-Man he sold to the Daily Bugle. Jameson then hired him to participate in an experiment inducing animal mutations in humans in order to create an agent capable of defeating Spider-Man. Gargan was then grafted to a mechanical suit and the Scorpion was born. His inclusion in this film could be a set up or tease for the Sinister Six film rumored to be back in development at Sony, after they did the same with their Venom project and the recent reports that Kraven the Hunter and Mysterio were also receiving spinoffs.
Surprising everyone, Jennifer Connolly‘s name showed up on the cast list as Karen/Suit Lady. Supplemental reports identify her as the A.I. in Peter’s suit, with Suit Lady likely being the nickname he calls her. Connolly previously appeared as Betty Ross in Universal’s Ang Lee directed Hulk, which was made five years before the MCU. Marvel rebooted the film that year with The Incredible Hulk, in which Elizabeth Tyler assumed the role.
Those are some very interesting casting revelations and I’m excited to see if Marvel decides to take these further or leave them as fun little easter eggs.
Spider-Man: Homecoming is scheduled for release July 7, 2016.
