This is Rumor Control. Here are the facts. For a few weeks now, updates regarding the upcoming X-Men spin-off The New Mutants have been coming in at an alarmingly high rate. Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, Henry Zaga and Blu Hunt have already been confirmed as Magik, Wolfsbane, Sunspot & Mirage while Rosario Dawson is currently in negotiations to star as Dr. Cecilia Reyes. The last two members of the team to be cast are Cannonball and Warlock, but according to recent rumors one of those might already be taken care of.
THR is reporting that Charlie Heaton, one of the breakout stars of Netflix hit Stranger Things, is currently in negotiations to star as Cannonball, one of several mutants trapped in a medical facility for experimentation who must find a way to escape while being stalked by a demonic spirit bear stalking them responsible for the deaths of Mirage’s parents. Both the studio and director Josh Boone have revealed that they are trying to reinvent the superhero movie by shooting this film as a straight-up horror set in the X-Men world, describing it as “John Hughes meets Stephen King.”
New Mutants begins shooting this July in Boston for release April 13, 2018.
