Sylvester Stallone and Jackie Chan have been staples of the action film genre for over 30 years, yet we’ve never seen them appear in a film together, despite being good friends in real life. Chan was reportedly offered a role in both The Expendables 2 and The Expendables 3, but had to turn both down due to scheduling conflicts. Any hope of rectifying that were dashed recently when Stallone revealed he would not be returning for the fourth film. Back in 2015, Stallone showed up at the premiere of Terminator Genisys where he revealed that he and Chan had met a couple of weeks prior to discuss appearing in a film together, which he expressed interest in having Arnold Schwarzenegger appear in as well. During a red carpet interview, he amusedly broke the news by saying:
“The secret’s out Jackie. You. Me. Arnold. China. Great, great movie.”
No other details were given on the project at that time, but it seems those talks didn’t just fetter off into nothing. According to Deadline, the two will finally meet onscreen in an action-thriller called Ex-Baghdad, set to be directed by Scott Waugh (Need for Speed, Act of Valor) from a script by Arash Amel (Erased). Chan will serve as a producer through his company SR Media along with Qi Jianhong (Railroad Tigers, Dragon Blade) and Talent International’s Esmond Ren (Skiptrace, Chinese Zodiac) and Hans Canosa. SR Media and Talent International will also finance the film.
Here’s the synopsis:
When a China-run oil refinery is attacked in Mosul, Iraq, a Chinese private security contractor (Chan) is called in to extract the oil workers. He learns, however, that the attackers’ real plan is to steal a fortune in oil, and teams up with an American former Marine (Stallone) to stop them.
Apparently, this is the project Stallone walked away from the Expendables franchise for, although it appears that China is pretty much running things behind the scenes. Chan previously cameoed in a Russian film Journey to China: The Mystery of Iron Mask along with Arnold Schwarzenegger, but this will be the first time he will appear with his former action box office brethren in a straight up action film.
There’s no additional casting or filming dates available, but IMDb has it eyeing a 2019 release date. Check back here for more information.
