Everyone pretty much agrees that Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham were one of, If not THE, best parts of The Fate of the Furious. Fans were slightly disappointed when word circulated last week that star/producer Vin Diesel had an after-credits scene cut from the final film that would have teased a spinoff involving their characters Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw (reportedly fallout from Diesel and Johnson’s on-set beef over screentime), but according to Deadline, Universal is moving forward quickly on the project, with Chris Morgan (who’s written every film in the franchise since The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift) penning the script. The studio apparently wants to fast-track the spinoff while they figure out how to approach the 9th film, for which Diesel and Johnson are confirmed to be returning for, having squashed the aforementioned beef.
Universally, I think we can all agree that putting these two together is a really smart move for the studio. Cinematic universes are the latest Hollywood trend, and with the growing number of unique and interesting characters they keep featuring, it only makes sense for the franchise to follow suit. Statham and Johnson’s chemistry was spot on in Fate, plus physically they’re both as macho as it gets (I personally thought their brawl in Furious 7 was the best fight of the entire film). With this spinoff, the franchise is almost completing its transition from racing film to straight-up action film, and I couldn’t be more excited for it.
