At long last, 20th Century Fox has finally chosen an actor to portray fan-favorite X-Men character Cable in the upcoming Deadpool sequel…..and according to The Hollywood Reporter, that man is Josh Brolin, who has reportedly signed a four-picture deal, making him the third headliner of Fox’s R-rated X-Men universe along with Ryan Reynolds and the recently cast Zazie Beetz. Brolin beat out a slew of other rumored contenders such as Brad Pitt, Pierce Brosnan, David Harbour, Michael Shannon, Russell Crowe, Kyle Chandler and many, many others.
Created by writers Chris Claremont & Louise Simonson and artist/co-writer Rob Liefeld, Cable was born Nathan Christopher Charles Summers, the son of X-Men team leader Scott Summers/Cyclops and Madelyne Pryor, a clone of Jean Greg created by Mr. Sinister in order to produce the ultimate weapon against the mutant demagogue, Apocalypse. As a baby, Nathan was infected with a techno-organic virus that threatened to take over his entire body, thus killing him. To save his life, his parents sent him into the future to be raised by an older version of his alternate reality sister Rachel where he became a hardened soldier named Cable. Eventually, he traveled back in time to prevent Apocalypse’s rise to power and came to fight alongside his father and the X-Men. He was originally the leader of the mercenary group Six Pack, then later the New Mutants, whom he reorganized into the first X-Force team. He’s also served as an Avenger on Captain America’s Unity Division. Aside from his skills as a soldier, Cable inherited vast psionic powers from his mother (who in turn carried them from Jean Grey’s DNA); however, these are mostly used to keep the techno-organic virus in his body in check. The comics have variously cured his condition, allowing him to fully utilize his abilities, and having his powers burn themselves out and replaced with technological substitutes.
Brolin’s casting, while perfect, is a surprise move for Fox, seeing as he’s already been cast as Thanos in Marvel’s own cinematic universe; a role he’s previously portrayed in Guardians of the Galaxy and the mid-credits stinger of Avengers: Age of Ultron. He is set to return to the role front and center for Avengers: Infinity War and its currently untitled sequel. And while actors such as Ben Affleck, Michael Keaton, Chris Evans, Willem Dafoe, J.K. Simmons and Deadpool stars Ryan Reynolds & Morena Baccarin have portrayed comic book characters for different studios before, Brolin is among one of the only actors to do so simultaneously and as an A-list player to boot. All that aside, I’m excited to see him bring Cable to life and play opposite Reynolds’ Deadpool. The sequel was being eyed to start filming sometime this year for a 2018 release, but with Avengers: Infinity War and its sequel filming back-to-back, that’s looking very unlikely. The writers and execs have said they are in no rush to get the film to screens, so fans don’t have to worry about a hurried, inferior product.
Now all we have to wait on is the villain announcement.
