O’Shea Jackson Jr., son of rapper/actor Ice Cube, received positive acclaim for portraying his father in the 2015 biopic Straight Outta Compton, which followed the career of gangsta rap pioneers N.W.A. Since then, he’s appeared in the comedy-drama Ingrid Goes West and is already set to appear next year in a heist film called Den of Thieves alongside Gerard Butler, 50 Cent and Pablo Schreiber.
Now, you can add blockbuster monster movie to that list, as he’s officially joined the cast of Godzilla: King of the Monsters in an undisclosed role, making him the third actor from Straight Outta Compton to appear in Legendary Pictures’ MonsterVerse, following Corey Hawkins and Jason Mitchell‘s roles in Kong: Skull Island. He joins Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things), with Kyle Chandler (The Wolf of Wall Street, Super 8) and Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring, The Departed) playing her parents. Michael Dougherty (Trick ‘r Treat, Krampus) is directing from a script he co-wrote with Zach Shields (Krampus). The plot is currently unknown, but it will feature classic kaiju Rodan, Mothra and King Ghidorah
I think it’s dope that Jackson is getting bigger and better film roles. If he keeps this up, his star power could potentially rival his father’s in no time. Ironically, his father also appeared in a monster movie back in 1997, the adventures horror film Anaconda (it was his seventh major film role).
Godzilla: King of the Monsters is scheduled for release on March 22, 2019 followed by Godzilla vs. Kong on May 29, 2020.
