As mentioned in a previous article, streaming giant Netflix has been paying particular interest to growing its slate of original anime programming, evident by the acquisition of such series as Knights of Sidonia, Ajin: Demi-Human, The Seven Deadly Sins, Cyborg 009: Call of Justice and Magi: The Adventure of Sinbad among others. They’ve also acquired the Godzilla: Monster Planet anime film from Toho Animation and Polygon Pictures.
The company’s streak aims to continue with the recent announcement of Devilman: Crybaby, a new anime series directed by Masaaki Yuasa (Mind Game, Genius Party) and written by Ichiro Okouchi (Valvrave the Liberator, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion).

And here’s the synopsis:
The story centers on shy teenager Akira Fudo, who’s asked for help by his best friend Ryo Asuka after his father dies after uncovering a mask during an excavation of the ruins of an ancient Mayan temple. It turns out the mask is actually a fossilized demon skull that allows her wearer to see what the Earth was like thousands of years ago, when demons ruled. To prevent them from rising again to reclaim the planet, Akira combines with a demon to become Devilman, retaining the heart of a human while gaining the power of a demon. Throughout the series, Akira fights demonic hordes, including the demon bird Sirène, the water demon Geruma and the turtle-like demon Jinmen.
The series is based on the Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Go Nagai, which was originally started as an anime adaptation of the concept of his previous manga series, Demon Lord Dante. Nagai began Devilman in Weekly Shōnen Magazine in June 1972, which ran for 5 volumes until June 1973. It has since spawned numerous OVAs, manga, novels, and films including the recent 3-episode OVA Cyborg 009 VS Devilman, which featured Devilman battling the cast of Shotaro Ishinomori‘s Cyborg 009. The original manga would also go on to influence series like Neon Genesis Evangelion and Berserk.
Devilman: Crybaby is tentatively scheduled to premiere on Netlfix in Spring 2018.
