This is Rumor Control. Here are the facts. There’s been a lot of back and forth regarding the Green Lantern’s place in the DC Extended Universe. It was originally assumed he would be appearing in Justice League, with #UniteTheSeven becoming an early marketing tagline for the film. When the final lineup was revealed however, the character was nowhere to be seen. It was confirmed around the same time that there would be a solo film titled Green Lantern Corps which would feature multiple Green Lanterns but focus specifi, with a teaser possibly coming in the second JL film. Still, since then, there have been various rumors that a Green Lantern would still be appearing in the first JL.
Notable movie news scooper Umberto Gonzalez has revealed that according to one of his many sources, the Green Lantern Abin Sur will be making an appearance at the tail end of Justice League (possibly the stinger) to warn the League about Darkseid’s impending arrival to Earth following their defeat of his uncle Steppenwolf. Regarding who the Lantern in question is, Gonzalez replied:
Yes, there is a Green Lantern in Justice League, but I forgot how to pronounce it.
This leaves the possibilities wide open as to who it could end up being, with a majority of the Lanterns being from planets other than Earth. However, according to the site Geek Feed, the answer may have already been confirmed. Apparently, they were contacted by a source last year who had visited the set and confirmed that concept art on display revealed that the Lantern in question is Abin Sur, the one who passed his ring and power battery to Hal Jordan after he died from injuries sustained while battling Parallax, the embodiment of fear. The character appeared in 2011’s Green Lantern played by Temuera Morrison, who is ironically portraying Aquaman’s father in the Aquaman solo film.
If the character is in fact appearing in Justice League, expect his backstory to be altered somewhat, as I’m sure this iteration of the Green Lantern is going to try to stay as far from Parallax as possible at first to avoid unfavorable comparisons to the 2011 film.
The lack of Green Lantern in Justice League is surprising, considering that the character has been depicted as a founding member of the team throughout its various incarnations since their debut in 1960. The original lineup consisted of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman, and Martian Manhunter; but in recent years, Manhunter’s spot has been supplanted by Cyborg and/or Shazam. The film’s lineup is close the original, consisting of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Aquaman & Cyborg. No reason has been given for omitting Green Lantern, but I’m hoping it will become clear once both JL films are in the can.
We still don’t know who will be portraying Hal Jordan and John Stewart in Green Lantern Corps, nor is it clear which (if any) will be appearing in Justice League 2. We’ll keep you posted here as the information becomes available.
